TRAININGS
[En Español]
Massachusetts has worked for decades to build a system of public structures that keep our communities safe and healthy, educate our children, and draw businesses to our state.
The debates over tax and budget policies in our state have profound implications for the future of all of our communities. Now more than ever, it is critical for concerned residents to weigh in on the important decisions being made by legislators and state officials.
ONE Massachusetts is offering updated trainings designed to give Massachusetts residents the tools needed to understand the implications of tax and budget policies and to advocate effectively for their own specific issues. Trainings free of charge for groups of all sizes, and range from 20-minute budget updates to half-day interactive workshops.
Trainings can be customized to include one or more of the following topics:
- Basic Budget Literacy: The affect of budget priorities & tax policies
- Building on Our Budget History: How decades of policy decisions in Massachusetts have shaped our state's budget, along with a look at our tax policy options moving forward.
- Talking About Our Government: Advocates that can communicate effectively about public policy issues are able to better engage their communities, and to move their friends and neighbors to create positive social and economic change. Research shows that the way that you talk about these issues, and about government itself, can dramatically change the conversation and help to rebuild people’s confidence in what we can accomplish together.
- Nonprofit Lobbying: These trainings will likely be in two tracks:
- How to utilize the information made available by the Secretary of State's new Lobbyist Public Search System.
- How nonprofit organizations can comply with the new Lobbying Reform law and maximize their advocacy rights at the same time!
Presenters include:
- ONE Massachusetts: Yawu Miller, Harmony Blakeway, and Carmen Arce-Bowen
- Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center: Noah Berger and budget training specialists
- Public Works: the Demos Center for the Public Sector: Patrick Bresette
BUILDING REGIONAL NETWORKS
ONE Massachusetts is a statewide network of community leaders, advocates, and friends and neighbors who care about all of our communities. Because we are a network, people and groups in our network are free sign on to those issues that they find compelling, or fit their organizational missions.
ONE Massachusetts builds its network through local, regional, and statewide trainings and convenings, building statewide organizational capacity and communication skills, and building support for issues within our three main goals: civic engagement, revenue, and government reform.
If you are interested in connecting with or building a local ONE Massachusetts network in your area, or are interested in a hosting a training for your organization or neighborhood, please join ONE Massachusetts and check the box asking for a training. We welcome your assistance in any or all of our work!
OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN CAMPAIGN
The Schott Foundation seeks to launch a five-year, multi-million dollar Opportunity To Learn philanthropic strategy to increase resource accountability and ensure that race is no longer a significant predictor of educational resource access or outcomes. The Schott Foundation will use its advocacy management firm philanthropic model to manage a grantmaking strategy to build the public will to increase the number of states that adopt an "Opportunity To Learn" reform framework and create a federal right to an Opportunity To Learn.
ONE Massachusetts is working closely with its organizational members to work towards having the necessary funding in the state to continue supporting our educational system and secure we all have an opportunity to learn. Last year the Opportunity to Learn Campaign selected ONE Massachusetts as its grantee of the year for supporting and working towards having a more equitable revenue system that funds our schools structures. If you would like to learn more about how we can work together in achieving this goal please do not hesitate to contact us.
